Artist Retreat

Morse Mtn.

Phippsburg PA.

The drive approach introduces horizontality as the first image of its form. Perched on a hill in the woods of Morse mtn., the north facade is surrounded by trees preventiting any views beyond the front elevation. The 2 story space consists of two primary building tectonics of wood and concrete with glass and steel as the mediating central core. The living quarters, constructed of wood, represents warmth and comfort while the workshop, assembled in concrete, focuses on the seriousness of the artisans livelihood; the foundation of ones success. The glass symbolizes the building vulnerability to the elements of the site; a gesture of the structure shedding its skin to expose itself to the shadows of nature.
